Sažetak
An important tool that has facilitated research on the relationship between language and emotion are affective norms. In these, large sets of words are evaluated by a large number of participants on different emotional dimensions. The majority of languages have well established affective databases rated by native speakers. As a global language, English has had a significant impact on other languages, especially in terms of lexical borrowing. In Croatian, many English words are used in their unadapted form. As of yet, a normative database of unadapted English words has not been developed for Croatian, or other languages. The present study collected valence and arousal norms for 400 most frequent English words in Croatian. The words and their frequencies were derived from two Croatian web corpora, hrWaC (2014) and ENGRI (2021). Correlations between the participants’ rates for valence and arousal, as well as between the ratings for the English words and their Croatian translations were explored. As usage of English words in other languages is often seen as prestigious, this normative database will allow researchers not only to further investigate the relationship between language and emotions, but also to look into psycholinguistic causes of sociolinguistics phenomena.
