Sažetak
Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) is a known method of reducing nitrogen oxides (NOX), but the impact of its deactivation on emissions has not been quantified. This paper, therefore, considers the impact of deactivating the EGR valve on NOX emissions in a diesel Euro 5 vehicle. The measurements were performed during nine driving cycles and in all cases, a significant increase in NOX emissions was found when the EGR valve was deactivated. NOX emissions increased between 176% and 407%, depending on the cycle driven. Measurement results indicate the origin of significant amounts of NOX emissions. Recommendations are to inform regulatory authorities about the effects of such manipulations in order to adopt more stringent measures and introduce them during periodic technical inspections of vehicles with the view to preventing such interventions.
