Sažetak
The purpose of this thesis is to report on the current state of English as a foreign language (EFL) teaching in the Italian public secondary school system by analyzing the experiences and perceptions of 80 EFL teachers working in Italian public secondary schools. Particular attention is given to the challenges these teachers face in their classrooms. A google module questionnaire was administered to the respondents, and their answers were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results indicate that the teachers in this study are largely up to date with modern teaching practices and sensitive to learner needs, and that they demonstrate a high degree of flexibility in changing their teaching styles in order to best fit the requirements of their classrooms. Additionally, the teachers show awareness of varied correction strategies, and value the importance of group and pair work and developing speaking skills. In fact, the teachers would like their students to take more communicative risks in the classrooms in order to become more fluent. As for the challenges, more than half of the teachers are not satisfied with their English language skills and state that they would prefer more teaching hours allocated to EFL in public schools, as well as native speakers in the teacher workforce. Furthermore, insufficient attention is given to the phenomenon of world Englishes. Finally, the teachers highlight the difficulties of becoming a teacher in Italy, stressing the length of the process.
