Sažetak
In the drive to internationalise higher education and position universities on the global educational market, institutions across Europe are increasingly introducing non-philological study programmes in English. Although research on English-medium instruction (EMI) seeks to present both the benefits and challenges of EMI, the latter have not been given due attention. The present study aims to fill this gap by drawing on data from several studies conducted at the University of Rijeka (UNIRI), which employed questionnaires, interviews and classroom observation among both EMI and non-EMI teachers and students. Given that the English language has been identified as the main stumbling block in EMI, this paper aims to give a critical insight into language-related challenges, its repercussions and discuss the potential measures that could be taken to ensure the effective implementation of EMI. To better illustrate these measures, we share examples of best practice at UNIRI, which are also directly relevant to other academic contexts that are involved in or plan on embarking on EMI.
