Sažetak
The transfer of DNA among bacteria is well documented. Sharing of genetic information across species barriers in other kingdoms is less clear, however Agrobacterium can genetically transform plants and fungi. The evolutionary significance of DNA transfer from Agrobacterium rhizogenes to plants is surmised from studies of the phenotypic effects of the Ri (root-inducing) T-DNA (transferred DNA). We previously suggested that soil bacteria receive as well as send DNA. In this hypothesis, bacteria serve as intermediates in horizontal DNA transfer among different plant species (Tepfer, 1983 ; Tepfer, 1989). We present laboratory evidence for the transfer of DNA from several angiosperm plants to Acinetobacter strain BD413, and we discuss the possible role of this transfer in evolution and in DNA leakage from transgenic crops.
