Sažetak
The aim of this paper is to point out the importance of observation of Christian sacred architecture from the position of its symbolic dimension comprehending sacred architecture as a spatial iconicity. During the 20th and the part of the 21st century it was noted that there was a lack of fundamental comprehending of the Christian sacred architecture from the viewpoint of its symbolic dimension. Strengthened by functionalist position of architecture during the 20th century, Christian sacred architecture tried to find its foundation in liturgical functionalism by comprehending the basic building elements of space such as the altar, pulpit, baptistery, sanctuary, confessionals, etc. as functional elements to perform rite. Those elements often found their place afterwards in the predefined architectural concept. The starting point for the design of sacred architecture was very often of an aesthetic position, creating beautiful spaces in which the mentioned building elements were arranged afterwards. At the same time, there was a lack of awareness that the basic building elements of sacred architecture itself are symbolic structures that seek their own architectural spatial expression. They are the bearers of the meaning of a spiritual and mysterious reality. Although there are solutions that affirm symbolic language of architecture, the intention of this paper is to recall the forgotten symbolic layers of Christian sacred architecture and its spatial iconicity task in the way it was understood during historical periods. The modern time have reduced them to their mere functional dimension thus impoverishing the complexity of Christian sacred architecture.
