Sažetak
Introduction: Sedentary lifestyle, and unhealthy dietary habits pose a major health risks. Purpose: To determine prevalence of obesity and to examine dietary habits of the Croatian population with to objective to detect regional differences in nutritional habits. Methods: Dietary habits assessment was conducted during 2003 by means of FFQ. Survey included randomly selected 9070 adults (male=2890 ; female=6180) at the age of 18 and above. Height and weight were measured using a single anthropometer. Body mass index (BMI) was classified into four groups: underweight < 18.5 ; BMI 18.5-25 normal weight ; BMI 25-29.99 overweight ; BMI (30+) obesity. Results: Out of 9070 study participants, 3540 (39.0%) were overweight, while 2013 (22.2%) examinees were obese. A tendency toward grouping as much unhealthy dietary habits as healthy by certain counties, respectively regions was observed. Peoples of the Eastern and Northern regions (except of the Medjimurska County) in comparison to peoples of other counties, significantly more often use animal fats, add salt to foods, consume less fruit and vegetables, and more cakes, sweets and cured meat products. Peoples of the Southern and Western regions, but also in Medjimurska County, significantly more often use vegetable oils, skimmed or semi-skimmed milk and diary products ; often consume fruit and vegetables daily, more rarely adding salt and consume less sweets and cakes. Differences in dietary habits are observed among genders, but also among participants of the same gender on the basis of geographical locations. Conclusions: Indicators of the present nutrition of the population show the slow but steady changes in dietary habits towards standard continental diet
