Sažetak
Various types of COVID-19 vaccines have been developed as a fundamental step toward ending the pandemic and decreasing the neuropsychiatric complications associated with COVID-19. Although the evidence gathered so far confirms the efficacy and safety of COVID-19 vaccines, side effects are possible as with all pharmaceutical agents. Given the limited data of psychiatric side effects, including reports of acute psychotic symptoms after COVID-19 vaccination, in this article, we present a series of three patients with no past or family history of mental illness who developed first-episode psychosis following administration of the COVID-19 vaccine. Two of the patients presented had been vaccinated with the BNT162b2 mRNA vaccine and one with Ad26.COV2.S adenoviral vector vaccine. All presented patients had neurological symptoms that preceded or occurred concurrently with the psychotic symptoms. The clinical presentation of one case rapidly culminated in a serious suicide attempt. We hypothesise that the heightened immune response induced by the COVID-19 vaccine may trigger psychotic disorders in vulnerable individuals, as there is increasing evidence of a link between inflammation, immunological dysfunction and psychosis.
