Sažetak
Underwater archaeological excavations on the island of Hvar, and on small isolated island Scedro next to it, have shown that maritimity was crucial in forming their own island identity and cultural landscape. They are located on the most significant navigation route along the Eastern Adriatic coast. Natural environment such as safe coves, fresh water on both islands, as well as similar, but in some periods different, historical circumstances have shaped their cultural identities. The islands have been inhabited since prehistoric times. Prehistoric finds have been also found in the sea. Roman texts mention ships used by Ilirians. 385./384.BC Hvar was colonized by the Greeks that have founded the first dated Hellenistic colony on the Eastern Adriatic coast, Pharos. They have cultivated a fertile field and expanded the coastline with an artificial embankment. The artifacts confirm the intense maritime trade of the city with the whole Mediterranean. The cultural landscape of the island has changed significantly. Local identity of the island has became international. After the Illyrian Roman Wars the islands gradually have romanized. Villae rusticae were building all over the islands. In the best protected bay of the island Scedro was built a villa maritime withe monumental underwater structures. Protected bays of the islands have been a safe shelter for the most of the boats but not for the one, recently discovered intact shipwreck from 2./1.c. BC. The protected bays of the islands have had significant role even in medieval maritime routes. That has been led to urbanization of the islands.
