Sažetak
The topic of artistic and architectural heritage of the nobility has long been only sporadically researched in Croatian art history, especially in 20th century. Some recent exhibition projects have presented the legacy of some families (Magnificent Vranyczany, Zagreb, 2016 ; heritage of families related to Hungary, Ars et Virtus, 800 years of common artistic heritage, Zagreb / Budapest, 2021- 2022). This paper will present the renovation and refurbishment of older castles from the baroque, owned by two families: Vranyczany and Erdödy. They conducted extensive interventions on their estates in North-western Croatia in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This period represents the last age of splendour, a kind of swan song of these buildings. The Vranyzany family as a new nobility in their estates in Oroslavje, Sv. Križ and Laduč, creates significant artistic and social centres, especially in Oroslavje. Erdödy as an example of the old nobility, with refurbishment and some renovations gave new life to the old family seats in the estates of Jastrebarsko and Novi Marof. The new nobility proved to be more ambitious, bringing new content and equipment in then popular Neo-Baroque and Neo-Rococo style, as well as new garden layout in romantic style next to castles, where greenhouses with exotic plants and arboretums are located. An intense period of decline of the castles followed in the interwar period due to agrarian reform and continued in the socialist period after the Second World War. Today, it is only possible to reconstruct their equipment through archival data and photographs.
