Sažetak
The paper discusses positions and oppositions in the Croatian architectural scene in the immediate post-WW2 period. In that precarious social and political moment, defined by Communist ideology, modernist culture fought for its survival, in the context of the dictate of Socialist Realism, which was sanctioned as the normative poetics of the new socialist system. In such circumstances, especially delicate was the medium of architecture, with its firm modernist roots inherited already from the pre-war period, now responsible for the construction of the adequate spatial frame to properly house new socialist society. The paper analyzes ways in which modernist architecture culture strove to defend its status and tradition. It specifically addresses the role that architecture theory played in that complex endeavor.
