Sažetak
In this paper, we deal with the terminology of a new interdisciplinary domain of ‘smart urban coastal sustainability’ underlying the transnational European university project EU- CONEXUS8 . The goal of the project is to offer a minor university program or a specialisation using the crossdisciplinary approach to different social, economic and cultural elements making up the coastal environment. Such alliance of experts and specialised knowledge requires the elaboration of the multilingual terminological database that will allow the researchers, and students in this case, to learn how to think between the disciplines and integrate them (Kluger and Bartzke 2020 ; Newell 2001 ; Repko 2007 ; Tress et al. 2005). The challenge resides in the fact that, in the process of emergence of the new crossdisciplinary field, sources from the existing domains like ecology, economy, tourism, biology and geography are being used with the aim of creating an interdisciplinary conceptual system. A terminologist should bear in mind that disciplines included in the new domain share a set of common concepts, which they approach from different perspectives. As the borders of these domains are not clear-cut, it is inevitable that terms transgress from their source domains to neighbouring domains (Cabré 1995 ; Schneider and Wegener 2010). Our analysis will be performed on a comparable English-French-Croatian corpus where for each language the corpus consists of two sub corpora, one containing scientific texts and the other didactic texts. A pilot study of the corpus showed the difficulties of determining the boundaries of the new interdisciplinary field and raised the question of the possibility of creating a new conceptual system. In this paper, we aim to investigate the challenges of a conceptual and terminological analysis for terms that have already been defined as part of neighbouring domains but are now presented inside a new interdisciplinary perspective. Special attention will be given to terms that change their meaning due to migration to a new domain. Our preliminary results show that the Croatian authors mostly take the economic perspective on coastal development while the French rather take the ecological one. Understanding the differences helps to understand the intertwining of different fields and the efforts of scientists to explain, for instance, the problem of climate change that simultaneously affects the economy, urban development, reorganisation of coastal areas and tourism. Previous research has also shown that not only the terminological definitions are important for the researchers to be able to communicate with each other, but also affect how concepts are formed and understood in a society. In our research, we will use a bottom-up approach to arrive at a list of conceptual categories by starting from available data in texts and dictionary entries. The top concepts will be arrived at through the analysis of definitions as well as through calculations of frequency in our corpus of specialised texts.
