Sažetak
Amphibians have an essential role in the ecosystems they inhabit. They are a link between the aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems and make up a large part of the environmental biomass. Chemical pollution is one of reasons for significant worldwide decreases in amphibian populations and there is a need for understanding the effect of different contaminants on them. Phenanthrene is one of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) that was identified in the aquatic environment and previous studies showed that it can negatively impact aquatic organisms. Studies also showed that nanoplastics can affect the toxicity of other compounds. In this study phenanthrene showed to have a negative effect on embryos and tadpoles. A difference in the sensitivity of the two tested amphibian species was observed, as well as a different sensitivity between embryos and tadpoles. Nanoplastic slightly increased the negative effect of phenanthrene, but this needs to be confirmed with further studies. Also, in vitro approach showed potential for studying negative effects of organic compounds on amphibians, but more research and method adjustments are needed for this to be supported.
