Sažetak
The overcoming of theological dogmatism with a sense of suspicion, a relentless faith in the power of evidence-based science, and an elevation of the principles of morally intellectual conscience and freedom of thought undoubtedly characterize those encyclopedic endeavours refl ected in the works of Julije Bajamonti, Split polymath, physician and composer, and one of the most learned and progressive personalities in the whole of Croatian history. Bajamonti kept up his connections with the scientifi c and literary minds of domestic and western European cultural circles through a ‘culture of correspondence’ and thus embodied a new type of intellectual who, while arguing for spiritual pluralism, placed reason at the apex of the human value system. He had a really wide circle of friends and acquaintances, as shown by lett ers (today preserved in Archaeological Museum in Split) that he received from and sent to various addressees in the period 1771 to 1800. Among his numerous correspondents, a signifi cant place belongs to Miho Sorgo (Sorkočević), Dubrovnik scholar, translator and diplomat, with whom Bajamonti enoyed a particularly intimate and cordial friendship through personal and writt en contacts. Respecting each other, they were constantly exchanging their own and other treatises, manuscripts and published books, magazines and discussions. The writing style of this Croatian Enlightenment follower is modern, and it approaches the level of European classicist thought insofar as it distances itself from scholastic philosophy and its later manifestations, and from the pathos of the literary baroque. Instead, it is oriented towards the practical refl ection in which philosophy is linked to politics in order to create a rich, modern nation. Bajamonti and Sorkočević exerted a specifi c infl uence on the cultural and social being of the Croatian intellectual elite, as well as on its representation far beyond the Croatian lands, through their intellectual versatility and epistolary dialogues. Working from primary sources, this essay provides the fi rst integral presentation of Bajamonti’s correspondence with Miho Sorkočević, endorsing at the same time the centuries-old cultural collaboration and connection between Croatian cultural milieux in this part of the Mediterranean
