Sažetak
The paper describes preliminary results on growth of pompano Trachinotus ovatus (Linnaeus, 1758), a probably potential candidate for aquaculture, in captivity. The experimental stock is established by catching of fingerlings with beach seine in waters near Dubrovnik, southeastern Adriatic, and kept in laboratory tanks. From beginning of September 2001 to beginning of April 2002 fingerlings were feed by peleted food. Experimental rearing showed good acclimation to laboratory conditions, relativey rapid growth and low mortality. With the input average weigth of 0.39 +/- 0.29 g (0.10 min, and 1.8 max) and average TL 3.38 +/- 0.78 cm (2.5 min and 6.6 max), the average gain in weigth after 191 days of holding in the tanks (1500 l) was 10.40 +/- 9.36 g (2.5 g min and 48.7 g max), and in TL 8.77 +/- 2.76 cm (5.2 min and 15.7 max). The slope of the total length-weight relationship showed negative allometric growth (b=2.88), with specific (daily) increment in growth (alpha = 1.73 g). The average value of the condition index was 1.54.
