Sažetak
Medicinal plants have been used for centuries to treat various diseases and ailments around the world. In Croatia, traditional knowledge about the use of medicinal plants for the treatment of animals is transmitted orally from generation to generation and has not been fully documented yet. Leaving the village and ceasing to engage in animal husbandry leads to the disappearance of these knowledge and traditions, so ethnobotanical research is a practical way to preserve the ethnoveterinary tradition. The presented data were collected through field interviews with the local population in Istria, the Hrvatsko Primorje and in the area of Dalmatian Zagora, in the period 2015 – 2021. The aim of the research was to document, analyze and evaluate the traditional ethnoveterinary knowledge of the local population about wild and cultivated medicinal plants that have traditionally been used for treatment. The results show the most frequently mentioned plant species used to treat various diseases and ailments in animals. In diseases of the digestive organs and for better digestion of sheep, dried seeds of amaranth (Amaranthus retroflexus L.), sorrel (Rumex acetosa L.), linen (Linum usitatissimum L.) would be given, coffee grounds (Coffea arabica L.), sunflower oil (Helianthus annuus L.) or grape brandy (Vitis vinifera L.) were also used. The most well-known antiparasitic are spruce oil (Juniperus communis L.), garlic (Allium sativum L.) and dried ground iris rootstock (Iris illirica Tomm. and I. germanica L.). Iris sp. it also contributes to better immunity, especially for cows after calving, as well as the preparation of a hen's egg with sugar (locally 'javaion') and red wine (teran) for immunity after calving cows. The problem of mastitis is solved by lubricating the udder with olive oil (Olea europaea L.) or colostrum (locally "mlezovina"). Against diarrhea, a decoction of quince leaves (Cydonia oblonga Mill.), fiddle dock seeds (Rumex pulcher L.), oak bark (Quercus sp.) and pieces of charcoal dissolved in water (local "kar(a)bon") was used. A decoction of St. John's wort (Hypericum perforatum L.) or squeezed cell juice from the leaves of unripe beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is also used to wash wounds and scratches in cattle. Hellebore (Helleborus dumetorum Willd. and H. niger L.) has long been used for cattle and horses for various inflammations - pierced "scarf" (part of the neck in the larynx) or ear, and cleaned hellebore root is passed to irritation therapy and by creating an abscess pulled out the inflammation. Danewort (Sambucus ebulus L.) has been used to treat swine ersypelas in pigs or to reduce swelling in snake bites in cows. Also when extracting fever from the body. Cypress spurge (Euphorbia cyparissias L.) was used to heal wounds in fractures and as an ecological insecticide (tick repellent). These results can be a starting point for further pharmaceutical research for indications proposed by the local population in order to find new herbal medicines and medicinal preparations in veterinary medicine.
