Sažetak
The fantasy genre is often considered a mode of escapism, allowing the reader to disengage from reality and everyday troubles. However, fantastic literature is a viable platform for the analysis of real-life problems, as authors often transpose the existing issues into the fantasy worlds. The imaginary setting is what provides the emotional distance necessary for the close examination of the presented problems. This means that the fantastic fiction is permeated with non-fictional problems, such as gender, racial, and class equality, to name a few. Ecological destruction is one of the pivotal problems that has arisen in contemporary times. This presentation deals with how the latter problems are shown in Rick Riordan’s fantasy series aimed at the middle grade and young adult audiences. The series that will be included are Percy Jackson and the Olympians and The Heroes of Olympus, both set in the contemporary world overlaid with mythological presences. One of the first characters that exhibits an evident link to the ecological problems is Grover, a satyr in search of the old- world god Pan, the patron of nature. Gradually, other characters also become involved with ecology, hence providing a wider view of the contemporary problems. The presentation aims to examine how the fantasy world displays ecological issues, but also which solutions are suggested in the novels. To provide the context, the presentation will open with an elaboration of ecocritical studies in literature and then focus on the instances in which the novels plainly speak out about the grave ecological situation. Furthermore, the presentation looks into the possible ecological solutions proposed by the novels and showcases how the solutions found in fantasy may still be relevant for the real-world, as well.
