Sažetak
Cats have intrigued humans for centuries due to their curious nature. Humans have tried to capture this nature in literature and film thus producing some of the most interesting and diverse characters that enrich our culture. Walt Disney universe is no exception. From good-hearted, sweet but spoiled kitten Figaro in Pinocchio to Lucifer, big, black, spoiled, wicked cat in Cinderella. In the 1950 Disney classic Cinderella, Lucifer is an evil cat, a tertiary antagonist who serves as both the driver of action and a symbol of evil whose meaning in the plot is constructed through interactions and reflections of the characters around him. Even though Cinderella enchants all the animals she meets, Lucifer seems immune to her charms and yet she shows him the same kindness as the rest of them. Pampered and spoiled by his owner, lady Tremaine, Lucifer does justice to his name: he is constantly provoking Cinderella, causing mischief, conniving and plotting against her and her friends while acting like “a shining star”. Lucifer embodies both feline and human traits through his actions and appearance, thus operating as a semiotic sign as well. This paper explores the various way in which Lucifer the cat was used in the Disney fairy tale to underpin the characters he interacts with, as well as the actions he performs to make the life of the heroine harder. In addition, even though he is a villain, Lucifer provides comic relief, again – in line with his name and feline nature.
