Sažetak
Human behaviour is essentially driven and determined by human needs. Human beings are motivated to behave appropriately in order to satisfy their needs. Human needs can be classified in different ways. Abraham Maslow developed one of the best-known classifications of human needs, classifying them into five categories according to the hierarchy – physiological needs, safety needs, social needs, esteem needs, and self-actualization needs. Satisfaction of human needs is primarily affected by a particular person’s employment status and professional career. Work-related human needs should be identified and systematized, and it should be made possible for employees to satisfy them optimally. This means creating job characteristics and working conditions that encourage employees, work and work motivation. Regarding the subject matter, preliminary empirical research was conducted using the survey method. The research objective was to determine the respondents’ perception of the level of motivational effects of specific job characteristics. Job characteristics in the questionnaire were classified into appropriate groups that correspond to the characteristics of the respective categories of human needs. Respondents were students of the Police College in Zagreb. Ninety-three of them (66 police officers and 27 “civilians”) participated in the survey. Research results were presented through individual, group, and comparative discourse. They show that good interpersonal relationships and work climate are the most motivating job characteristic, that social needs are the most motivating category of needs ; and that there are specific differences in the opinions of men and women and police officers and civilians. Research results can serve as a basis for further in-depth and more comprehensive research on the subject matter and orientation or incentive for improvement of human resource management in the police.
