Sažetak
Depression is a complex psychiatric disorder following many comorbidities such as diabetes, insulin resistance and obesity. Depression during childhood is associated with increased body mass index (BMI), while depression increases the odds of obesity, leading to major depressive disorders (MDD). The use of antidepressants may be associated with weight gain in terms of suppressing satiety and diminished physical activity, and fatigue by decreased motor activity. Patients with depression are more likely to be obese, whereas carriers of the risk allele of the FTO rs 9939609 are particularly prone to higher BMI. Further studies are needed in the field of the epigenetic individual approach that would include the recommendation of diet and medications that can influence expression and reduce the negative effect of risk alleles FTO gene on BMI.
