Sažetak
The New Year’s Eve Patent of 1851 proclaimed unlimited imperial absolutism. It was a new type of absolutism aimed at transforming the Habsburg Monarchy into a unified and centralized modern state with the goal of gaining supremacy in the German ethnic area. This new absolutism was basically a military-bureaucratic autocracy supported by the Catholic Church that sought to create the preconditions for economic progress in the capitalist spirit. The Viennese government systematically and uniformly implemented reforms in administration, judiciary, economy, and in the educational system. Results of these reforms were very different, and in some places, Croatia included, they met with resistance. Modernisation reforms were accompanied by strict and systematic control of the population and all spheres of public activity. In such circumstances many previously politically active intellectuals in Croatia devoted themselves to some form of cultural or scientific work.
