This introduction serves the tripartite function of surveying the field, weaving together the methodologies underpinning the collection and providing a chapter-by-chapter scan of the volume. It acknowledges the work done on disco to date and illuminates some of the intellectual problems the book works with, frames the volume via a deep reading of two critical instruments used across the volume to establish a connection between ‘scene’ and ‘field’—Foucault’s heterotopia as a fluid critical edifice and the notion of ‘digging’ as an applied methodology—and introduces the authors and their interventions as a ‘set of guided tours’, which refute disco grand-narratives through a set of counter-hegemonic archives and local archaeologies.
