Sažetak
Virgil’s Eclogues, while not an epic poem, and thus lacking a proper invocation, still make mention of the Muses at the very outset of the first eclogue in an almost epic fashion. In this paper, I shall address the question of to whom Virgil was really referring at the outset in his quasi-invocation. The answer to this question is located in the Eclogues’ final verses ; namely, it wasn’t quite the Muses that he was referring to, but rather the Roman Camenae. The crux of this theory rests on the repetition of a simple formula, ite.. ite…, used by Virgil in several verses of his Eclogae, and also in the Aeneid. To support my claim, aside from the Eclogues themselves and other works written by Virgil, I shall also refer to works by Propertius, Tibullus, Horace, and the Appendix Vergiliana, in which we find the same formula. Taken together and examined in their individual contexts, these verses offer tantalizing hints of the nature of the mysterious Roman Camenae, whose Roman identity has been dampened for so long, in great part due to their early association with the Greek Muses.
