Sažetak
The perfection of the cube has always been captivating. Alluring in its impeccable geometry, in its supreme purity, in its absolute precision and balance, it became the epitome of a timeless beauty: classical and universal, essential and autonomous, with self-sufficiency of a harmonious silence. As such it kept provoking all sorts of artistic and architectural responses. Creative play with its pure abstract form and interventions in its perfection guided some of the most intriguing artistic works and rendered some of the most spectacular architectural cubes. Suffices here to remember just the grand cases of Terragni’s crystalline Casa del Fascio, the series of compact Loos’s cubes, Rossi’s enigmatic cubic envelopes or Eisenman’s structural etudes guided by the rule of the cube. Cube proved indeed a lasting architectural inspiration and challenge. Love of the cube is also at the heart of Two Architects’ architectural thinking – a sort of central motif in their design philosophy. A line of consistent permutations and investigations on the topic of the cube might be clearly traced in their architectural work and design procedures. With that focus in mind, it is most logical to expect to meet in their work creative dialogues with those celebrated architectural cubes. And Two Architects – Tomislav Ćurković and Zoran Zidarić – openly admit and honor their guiding design references. All from 1992, when they established their joint practice and formed their architectural office in Zagreb, they rehearsed commitment to serious architectural inquiry, to a systematic design research, with lasting inclination towards modernism’s operations and protocols, along with later structuralist and poststructuralist reverberations.
