Sažetak
The human body is often used as a basis for the production of different metaphors due to our physical and emotional experience of the world around us. These metaphors allow us to conceptualize abstract concepts on the basis of inferential patterns directly tied to the body. Metaphorical extensions from the body can be realized through visual resemblance, orientation, and function. This thesis discusses the concept of orientational metaphors, i.e. metaphorical expressions that involve pairs of spatial antonyms (up-down, front-back, left-right). These six directions may be distinguished as either positive or negative if we imagine ourselves standing at the zero-point of spatiotemporal coordinates (the so-called egocentric viewpoint). The positive- negative distinction will be shown on the examples of idiomatic expressions taken from a number of phraseological dictionaries and internet forums for the three languages in comparison: English, Croatian and Polish. The assumption is that one half of the directional pair will always carry positive meaning, and the other half will always carry negative meaning when used in idiomatic expressions. We expect that all three languages will show similarities between metaphors that use spatial orientation as a source. Also, the similarities are expected to be bigger between the two Slavic languages (Croatian and Polish) than between English and Croatian, or English and Polish, which was eventually confirmed.
