Sažetak
Perinatal mental health problems are prevalent, and one in five women experience some mental health difficulties. Most common are depression and anxiety disorders. Complex interactions of biopsychosocial factors underly these disorders, and they have many detrimental effects both on the mother's health and the child's development. Moreover, it is estimated that two-thirds of the costs associated with perinatal mental health problems are related to child outcomes. One of the first outcomes in the child that can be related to maternal mental health is breastfeeding. In the lecture, findings from studies on breastfeeding and maternal mental health, such as depression, anxiety, and stress, will be outlined and discussed. As exclusive breastfeeding in the first six months is strongly promoted, mothers can also experience a wide range of unpleasant emotions if they do not succeed with breastfeeding. They can struggle with guilt, shame and feeling of inadequacy, which can be a trigger for developing perinatal mental health problems. Therefore, early detection for both breastfeeding and mental health problems is advised to protect mothers and babies at the start of their journey.
