Sažetak
Dubrovnik historic center (Old Town), also known as “The Pearl of Adriatic” and listed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List since 1979, in recent years has experienced dramatic population loss. While the number of local inhabitants and permanent residence dwellings are decreasing, number of tourist accommodation and facilities are recording a great increase. The aim of this paper is to get more insight into relation of tourism, out- migration and quality of life in the Dubrovnik inner city. This study uses Croatian census data from the year 1991, 2001 and 2011, data from Internal census of the population, households and dwellings 2016 and results from the survey Quality of life in the historic core of Dubrovnik carried out in 2017.. Two third of the respondents stated that living conditions in the historic center are worse than in other parts of Dubrovnik. Local population of the historic center stated that their quality of life is deteriorating dramatically because of unregulated tourism and lack of every-day facilities and services (stores, crafts etc.) Major problems within the historic core that were expressed by the inhabitants are the following: lack of stores and services for day-to-day needs, inadequate infrastructure, privatization of the public spaces, unpleasant odours from the restaurants, crowd, noise, etc. 22.5% of the respondents planning to move away from the inner city within the next five years, mostly because of the detorioration of the quality of life. The local residents understand importance of tourism for local economy, but are also aware of necessity of a balance between local community and their way of life and tourism. Most of them think that the number of visitors should be limited and the long-term planning of the tourist season is needed to preserve the authenticity of historic city-center and cultural heritage.
