Sažetak
Throughout the eighteenth century, the Habsburg Monarchy and Russian Empire became more and more intertwined on various levels. However, many other political entities were also inevitably involved in the affairs of these two growing powers. Among others, when speaking of the influence on the Mediterranean space, the Republic of Venice played a noticeable role, especially in creating modern Russian navy by transferring its respectable knowledge and experience of naval warfare to Russian institutions and individuals alike. One of the crucial contributors to the early eighteenth century Russian naval power can be considered Matija Zmajević. Former Venetian subject from Perast, a small town on the Eastern Adriatic Venetian possessions, Zmajević served in Russia during the time of Peter the Great and his successors, reaching the rank of the admiral and creating the basis for the Russian fleet on the Black Sea. This paper brings a contribution by directing further research of this interesting and in some aspects controversial individual through the presentation of the archival material, namely the collection of the Karaman family (sign. HR- DAZD-495, Obitelj Karaman) kept in the State Archives in Zadar. Some members of the aforementioned family were firmly connected with Matija and left valuable information on his activity in Russia. Finally, Matija Zmajević will serve as a paradigm for the better understanding of the relations between the Serenissima and Russia on a broader plan, yet indicating also complex Venetian affairs with the Habsburgs.
