Sažetak
Aim: to asses the level of awereness and the attitudes od Croatian third zear medical students about tobacco control strategies. Methods: The Global Health Professionals Survey (GHPS) was conducted among third zear medical students in all four medical schools in Croatia during the 2005 and collected information concerning the awareness about official smoking policy at school and clinics and enforcement of such eventual policy. It also collects information concerning the attitudes toward banning smoking and other tobacco control measures. The sample.included 404 of 409 eligible students (98.5%). Findings: Most students (up to 97%) favored banning smoking in playgrounds and all enclosed public spaces. Men are significantly more likely to support a ban of tobacco use in discos, bars and pubs. Eight in ten students stated that there should be a complete ban on tobacco advertising. High support (83%) for yet practically non-existent school regulations shows the low level of knowledge about school-specific tobacco control strategy among Croatian medical students. Conclusion: Medical students in Croatia were very supportive of tobacco control efforts. School officials should work with tobacco control experts to design effective school specific policies and bans on smoking in common areas and ensure the enforcement of these rules.
