Sažetak
Understanding and embracing the European dimension in education is not an easy task. To begin with, if we try to explain the European dimension in education in the simplest way, we can say that it is a complex concept which includes the need to create and promote a unified European education system. There are numerous documents, recommendations, reports of European institutions on the basis of which one can read the history of the European and the development of the idea of the European dimension in education. The reason for this is that, over the years, the European institutions have seen a new way to promote the idea of unification of Europe in education. The starting point is that Europe's political and economic integration is possible only if people are fully aware of Europe's unique historical and cultural foundations, common European values and understand the meaning of a common European perspective. In other words, the importance of ED in education lies in developing awareness of belonging to Europe and the associated responsibility for its future. I try to highlight the most important processes that influenced the emergence and development of ED in education, the most important concepts of ED in education and the purpose and role of ED in the teaching and learning process. In this regard, the first step in explaining the European dimension in education is to interpret the context and process of the idea of ED in education by monitoring the activities of European institutions. The second step is the need to interpret the basic concepts which describe and include ED in education. These key concepts are, above all, Europe and the European idea. Finally, the third step in understanding ED in education is to explain the implementation or process of promoting ED goals in education based on determining its purpose and role, keeping in mind the process of teaching and learning.
