Sažetak
This paper studies the variable realization of word-final –d in the variety of Ciudad Real, Spain. As a transitional variety between the phonetically innovative southern and conservative northern dialects, the accent of Ciudad Real demonstrates characteristics of both: with respect to the variable in question it is the most advanced of the Castillian varieties, but comes short of the categoricity of the Andalusian. The process of the deletion of word-final –d in Ciudad Real seems to have been stopped in its last phase owing to pressure from above, and the situation is furthermore complicated by the insertion of the northern variant [θ], which has surpassed the canonical allophone. While following phonetic context is the most important linguistic predictor, the influence of the separate lexical items also needs to be taken into consideration.
