Sažetak
The Glyptotheque of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts is a museum of sculpture and a unique institution in the Republic of Croatia which collects mostly plaster models of eminent Croatian sculptors and plaster casts of the national heritage from Antiquity and the Renaissance. The museum is located in a former industrial building, a tannery, and is the first example of industrial architecture being put to cultural use. In a strong earthquake of 5.5 on the Richter scale that took place on March 22, 2020, both the fabric and the collections of the museum underwent severe damage. This is the country’s biggest sculpture museum in an industrial complex and it was challenging to react quickly in the sense of heritage protection. Unfortunately numerous museum objects were damaged, including a large number of sketches, portraits of plaster models and sculptures, by established Croatian artists who had put Croatian culture in their debt with their artistic work and positioned it as part of European art. Three hundred and forty-eight items of unique plaster models of Croatian sculpture and plaster casts were damaged or destroyed. From the very beginning, the staff of the Glyptotheque worked on packaging fragments, securing and preventing further damage to museum objects damaged in the earthquake. It will take great efforts and financial resources to repair the damage to those objects and to rebuild damaged buildings. The efforts have involved professional staff of the Glyptotheque and also volunteers - professional restorers, who kindly helped us to make a detailed documentation of the current condition of the damaged sculptures. We are truly grateful for the solidarity and support that individual institutions have expressed. The response to this earthquake showed that solidarity and care for heritage go together and that we have a big job ahead of us to achieve such conditions as to prevent any similar catastrophic damage occurring.
