Sažetak
Objectives: The objective of our study was to evaluate the heritability and genetic gain in the main quantitative traits of 19 lines (derived F4 and F5 generation) of soybean in comparison to 8 parents.
Material and Methods: The 19 lines of soybean evaluated (during 1994-1996 at Osijek) in this study was chosen on the basis of their maturity and grain yield components in previous cycle of selection. Soybean genetic improvement was estimated by follow parameters: mean value, variability, heritability (Singh, 1993) and genetic gain from selection (Allard, 1960; Falconer, 1960) in the main quantitative traits.
Results and discussion: The results of the investigation and statistical data processed imply (mean value, coefficient of variability, heritability, genetic gain, coefficient of correlation) that the soybean lines tested were had higher mean value and heritability and lower variability than parents in the principal agronomic traits under observation. These results agree with our previous investigation, Sudarić et al, 1996. The values of analysed selection parameters were high dependence of external factors, such as year. On average, the investigated soybean lines were more-yielding than parents.
Conclusion and Perspectives: The genetic gain for grain yield was achieved in our soybean breeding program. The evaluation of heritability and genetic gain enables correct selection of parental pairs for hybridization and a more reliable breeding for yield in the generations following hybridization.
