Sažetak
New materials and design techniques allow engineers to build slender and lightweight structures. Lightweight and slender structures tend to vibrate when subjected to dynamic loads. Such structures must be checked for serviceability. Over the years, numerous studies have been conducted on the problem of pedestrian- induced vibration on footbridges. Despite the numerous studies, many famous footbridges built around the world in the last decades have problems with dynamic behaviour due to vibrations caused by walking or running. In the case of pedestrian bridges, designing against pedestrian-induced vibration requires knowledge of the characteristics of the pedestrian action, a response evaluation method, and comfort criteria. Many dynamic load models (DLMs) have been proposed in the literature for serviceability verification related to vibration, but none of them have been included in the European structural design standards, which is a major shortcoming in the author's opinion. Fortunately, the general recommendations for comfort criteria are included in the European standard EN 1990:2002. This article provides an overview of the current European and international norms, standards and guidelines dealing with the serviceability of footbridges due to human-induced vibrations.
