Sažetak
The nasal valve was originally described by Mink in 1903.1It may be described as the aperture between the nasal septum and the caudal border of the upper lateral cartilage (ULC). The angle formed between them is normally 10-15° in Caucasian patients and more obtuse in the African or Asian nose.2 A more contemporary, three dimensional description includes the nasal floor inferiorly, upper lateral cartilages superiorly, nasal alar and bony pyriform apertures laterally and the cartilaginous septum medially.3The described area corresponds to the internal valve while the external valve is a cross-sectional area between the columella, nasal floor and the nasal rim. The external and internal nasal valves should be considered separately when assessing the etiology of valvular dysfunction that is dependent on the particular structure that caused the collapse. In many cases, more than one structure is affected. The most common cause is nasal septal deviation. The second most frequent cause is iatrogenic valvular collapse secondary to rhinosurgery, especially after removal of the nasal roof and overresection of the lower lateral cartilages. Also, trauma or previous surgery can create valvular area webbing or stenosis. Hypertrophy of the inferior turbinates can significantly increase inspiratory nasal airway resistance. There are many suture techniques and grafts which can be used to augment the internal nasal valve angle.
