Sažetak
Introduction: Our previous studies demonstrated positive effects of n-3 PUFAs enriched hen eggs on microvascular function in athletes. Moreover, activities of antioxidant enzymes (GPx and SOD) were significantly decreased. The aim of this study was to assess mRNA expression of antioxidant enzymes Gpx1, Gpx4, SOD2 and CAT in athletes who consumed regular hen eggs or enriched eggs. Methods: Randomized, double-blind, controlled interventional study (Clinical Trials ID: NCT04564690) was conducted in athletes divided to: control group (N=6) and Nutri4 group (N=8) who consumed 3 hen eggs per day for 3 weeks. Subjects in the "Nutri4" group consumed hen eggs enriched with n3-PUFAs (1026 mg/daily), lutein (616 mg/daily), selenium (0.191 mg/daily) and vitamin E (1098 mg/daily) and control subjects consumed regular hen eggs (438 mg of n-3 PUFAs, 110 mg of lutein, 0.181 mg of selenium and 595 mg of vitamin E daily). mRNA expression of Gpx1, Gpx4, SOD2 and CAT was determined with real time PCR (BioRad, CFX96 Real – Time System). Results were normalized to GAPDH housekeeping gene and control and presented as fold change (2−ΔΔCT). One way ANOVA was conducted for statistical analysis with Tukey post hoc test ; p<0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Consumption of enriched hen eggs caused a significant increase in SOD2 mRNA expression, while other antioxidative enzymes’ mRNA expression did not exhibit significant difference in control, NUTRI4 or between groups. Discussion: Antioxidans such as n3-PUFA, selenium, lutein and vitamin E can affect expression of antioxidant enzymes or their activity. Antioxidant enzymes protect the organism against oxidative damage. Selenium is an integral component of many antioxidative enzymes including SOD2. Consumption of Nutri4-enriched eggs can affect the gene expression of antioxidant enzymes to provide protection against the oxidative stress in athletes. Conclusion: Current results support the hypothesis that functional food has a capacity to act as natural antioxidant.
