Sažetak
The literary works of Croatia`s most famous Japanese studies scholar, Vladimir Devide, represent a high valuable legacy. Their main focus in on the popularisation of Japanese culture in Croatia and the former Yugoslavia, however they reflect a kind of interest toward Japan that was overwhelming in the “Western” world during the second half of the 20th century. This paper aims to deconstruct the author`s way of presenting Japan by placing it within the frame of nihonjinron theories. Most nihonjinron theorists had a rather positivistic view of Japanese society, and it is quite rare to find a neutral attitude. Their way of thinking also implied a kind of equality in certain tendencies, a homogeneity of behaviour, thought, and perception in Japanese society, while a neutral, data-based attitude toward Japanese culture is the main focus of Japanese studies today.
