Sažetak
Stereotypical behaviours occur in most people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and often significantly interfere with their functioning. The aim of this paper is to provide a short overview of frequently used behavioural methods and procedures to reduce stereotypies in children with ASD, and to summarize the results of the recent systematic reviews evaluating their efficacy/effectiveness. The results of recent systematic reviews suggest that, in treating motor stereotypies, most empirical support is provided for altering environment during the session and differential reinforcement of alternative behaviour (Akers et al., 2020), while in the treatment of vocal stereotypies empirical support for the methods of auditory stimulation and methods based on consequences prevail (Wang et al., 2020). Limitations of the conducted effectiveness studies have been discussed and some recommendations for planning future research proposed (conducting functional analysis prior to implementation of the intervention, testing the integrity of the treatment, examining long-term effects, the effects on other behaviours, generalization across location, stimuli and people, etc.). Furthermore, for more certain conclusions about the extent to which treatments are based on scientific evidence, the conduction of the randomized controlled trials (RCTs) is strongly recommended. In clinical practice, it is necessary to ensure that children with ASD are provided with the therapeutic procedures grounded in science, delivered on time and with appropriate intensity.
