Sažetak
Over recent decades there has been a tendency of internal divisions of sociology, as it has dispersed into numerous, highly specialized sub- disciplines. Although such specialization contributes to generating valuable detailed knowledge on particular topics, it simultaneously induces the fragmentation of sociology, so that generally it becomes incapable to comprehend the axial transmutation processes of contemporary societies. Therefore, sociology diminishes its explanatory power, which consequently has a negative effect on its reputation within the scientific community and the broader social environment. Having in mind these circumstances, the pivotal thesis advocated in the paper is that there is an urgent need to elevate the internal cohesion of the discipline, aimed at integrating the fragmented sociological insights. This objective presumes nurturing several complementary processes of integration : a) inter-empirical- theoretical (linking the empirical and theoretical levels of analysis, i.e. establishing epistemic connection) ; b) inter-theoretical (bridging different analytical levels – establishing micro- meso-macro linkage) ; c) inter-empirical (connecting the knowledge of diverse sociological subfields) ; d) inter-social (ensuring the productive dialogue between different communities of narrow topic experts). Particular attention ought to be directed to fostering a more integrative approach in developing sociological knowledge in the process of professional socialization and education of upcoming generations of sociologists. Furthermore, the relation between sociology and other akin sciences is also discussed. Finally, the role and responsibility of sociological theory is underlined as considerably relevant, since it represents a manner of self-reflexive consideration of ongoing developmental tendencies within sociology.
