Sažetak
Introduction: Alongside apparent positive health implications, numerous studies evidence that sport represents efficient tool for obtaining social inclusion and integration (for instance, ). Practising sports activities contributes to integration of individuals and entire groups within dominant social matrix, and thus elevate the level of mutual trust, i.e. social capital. However, the likeliness of engaging with sports depends on diverse material and social determinants, such as: disposability of adequate infrastructure, accessibility of sports facilities, existence of required (public) transport means, presence of proper organizational forms, sufficient financial resources, experts training persons etc. As habits of conducting sports tend to be carried during the life course, it is especially important to ensure that school age children conduct sports. Aim: The basic objective of this paper is to juxtapose the opportunities of school (elementary and high) age children to practice sports in urban and rural areas. In particular, the analysis is addressed to consider the differences between pupils who inhabit different types of settlement in doing sports in Krapina Zagorje County, micro region in nortwestern Croatia. It is highly populated region with primarily rural inhabitants, while approx. one third of urban population. The analysis is anchored in desk research of available relevant data, as well as series of semi-structured interviews with persons responsible for the implementation of sports activities (notably school’s sports) in the County is accomplished. Results: Preliminary findings indicate that children dwelling in rural settlements have fewer opportunities for training sports on a regular basis. However, also overall situation regarding sports activities practicing in all aspects, in both types of settlements, ought to be enhanced by higher investments into sports, developing adequate infrastructure, organizational improvements, introducing the special programmes and public campaigns aimed at popularizing sports and healthy life-style. Moreover, it is of particular importance to ensure ability to children of weaker social status to practising sports. Further researches, leaned on both qualitative and quantitative methods, are exigent in order to deepen insights into examined issue.
