Sažetak
The starting premise is that engaging in organized sport activities represents a powerful tool of social inclusion, fosters empathy and prosocial behaviour and generates other social benefits, although the likeliness of realizing these potentials depends on a wide span of social factors. The central aim of the paper is to present the findings of an empirical research of the diverse features of sports activities of (elementary and secondary) school age population in Krapina Zagorje county in northwestern Croatia. The explorative/explanatory research is anchored in desk research of available relevant data and a series of semi-structured interviews that were conducted in 2018. The non-probability/purposive sample (N=16) comprises stakeholders relevant for the implementation of sports activities, such as trainers, officials in sports clubs, administrators in organizations in charge of school sports etc. Among other valuable empirical findings, the barriers to more intensive engagement in organized sports are especially highlighted: general decline of interest for sports, insufficient funding and financial support, average infrastructure and facilities, insufficient expert trainers engagement, particularly in the work with youngest pupils, inadequate policy framework and lack of general consciousness concerning the positive effects of sports. Concerning the opportunities of doing sports, children from rural areas of the County and girls are particularly deprived, as there is a lack of disposable sports contents for them. In the concluding section, the necessity of systematic work in improving the quality of sports in all its aspects is emphasized, requiring the contribution of a wide scope of social actors.
