Sažetak
Diverse sociological studies evidence an increase of inequalities (disparities in income, wealth, medical care, quality of life etc.) in the contemporary world. Owing to the growing gap between the rich, powerful and privileged societies and populations at the one hand, and the poor and deprived on the other hand, social scientists frequently employ binary dichotomies. However, such tendency can be misleading as it blurs the more complex gradient texture. Namely, alongside societies that represent centres of power (former imperial forces) and most underprivileged societies (previously colonies), there are many that cannot be subsumed under neither of the denoted categories, as is the case with several middle and south-eastern European countries, including Croatia. Its complex history, cultural heritage and developmental trajectories of being a constituent of various supranational entities reflect uneven and asymmetrical relations to centres of power in, for example the Austro- Hungarian Empire or, recently, the European Union. This paper is devoted to the critical scrutiny and epistemological valorisation of theoretical approaches (like modernization theory, world- system approach, dependency theory, globalization perspectives, democratic transition approach, postcolonial studies etc.) applicable in an inquiry of the overall transformation of Croatian society and its positioning into the global social environment.
