Sažetak
This paper deals with the linguistic diversity of the Istrian peninsula. Due to its geopolitical position Istria is the most northern part of the Mediterranean Basin and over the centuries is an intersection of different cultures and languages. The migration of the population in the late 20th century changed the composition of the population in Istria. This sociolinguistic study shows, that migration influenced language changes in the Istrian peninsula, which are reflected in the language/speech, both in town and countryside. The identity of the population is connected to the environment, from which they come, whether they come from the continent or from the coastal part because it correlates with the identity of the different cultures. Therefore, the prestigious status of the languages is associated not only with migration but also, if we examine Istria in a broader context, as a part of southern Europe, which is part of the Mediterranean Basin, it was for centuries a multilingual area. The languages that are spoken today in Istria are the topic of this paper.
