Sažetak
The aim of this work is to look at the role of religion(s) in public life, particularly how and why politicians use religious-in-political discourse. Aware of the size limitation of this research, which is based on a case study approach, the results are only indications and not conclusions of the patterns. The paper includes theory about metaphor, as a speech element used in both political and religious language and focuses further on the political dimension including aspects of power, as well as the religious dimension by defining religion and religious language, covering also the problem of language referring to the transcendental. The case study comprised of analysis of three different political speeches of politicians of varies backgrounds, Mahmous Ahmadinejad, Vladimir Putin and Barack Obama. Analysis was done with the help of critical discourse analysis (CDA) to highlight similarities and differences in the usage of religious language. Results of the analysis indicate that the religious language is used by politicians to back the claims, to reinforce arguments and to define identity.
