Sažetak
Polyphenols, expecially flavonoids, are well studied group of specialized metabolites. In nature, in certain plants species, expecially those used in traditional medicine, flavonoids may be present as dimers known as a biflavonoids. Flavonoid dimers consist of two identical or non- identical flavon flavonoid units joined in a symmetrical or unsymmetrical manner through an alkyl or an alkoxybased linker of varying length. In a recent years biflavonoids have been extensively evaluated for their biological activity and they show promising effects and superior activity than their monomeric subunits. Studies shown that biflavonoids possess antiprotozoal, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antiviral, antimicrobial, antiosteoporosis, antiproliferative, antitumoral, antiosteoporosis and antityrosinase activity. This talk will present overwiew of biflavonoids structure, biological activity and preliminary results of recently started project 'Biflavonoids role in plants: Gingko biloba L. as a model system' funded by Croatian Science Foundation (HRZZ- UIP-2019-04- 1018).
