Sažetak
The electron spin resonance spectra of γ‐irradiated powdered anhydrous α‐maltose have been measured. By temperature annealing it has been found that: (a) The room temperature ESR spectrum consists of at least three different types (A, B, C) of radiation‐induced damage centers. (b) Type A centers seem to result from a rupture of the C‐1—H bond. They transform into Type B centers with a half‐life of about 110 min (in air at room temperature). The most probable type of transformation seems to be a change in configuration of the pyranose ring. (c) Whereas Type B centers recombine under the above conditions with a half‐life of about 26 h, the half‐life of Type C centers exceeds a month. There are some indications that Type C centers are connected with a breaking of the glycosidic bond between two pyranose rings.
