Sažetak
This chapter focuses on the speech of three generations of Croatian-Australians. The chapter is foregrounded by situational and sociolinguistic features specific to Australia. These include: history of contact, vintages of emigration, status of Croatian in Australia, number of Croatian- heritage residents, number of Croatian-speakers and their geographic distribution and socio- economic profile, infrastructure (referring to schools, sporting facilities, cultural organisations), data on domain-specific use of Croatian, maintenance and shift and level of contact with Croatia. The larger section of the chapter is devoted to a linguistic description of a large corpus of recorded spoken data consisting of multiple samples. Analysis is conducted on the following: lexicon and pragmatics ; semantic transfers, loan translations and de-semanticised verbs ; code-switching ; morphology and syntax. Analysis of the above makes reference to other, congruent studies of Croatian or other Slavic languages in diaspora environments, as well as to contemporary contact linguistic frameworks to interpret and account for the linguistic phenomena documented.
