Sažetak
The article provides an overview of the destruction of Croatian hospitals during the 1991/92 war in Croatia. The Geneva Conventions clearly state that hospitals and medical centres marked with the Red Cross sign are to be spared artillery and other attacks. Nevertheless, medical institutions in Croatia, clearly marked with the sign of the Red Cross, were the first to be attacked and destroyed. Numerous heavy artillery hits and air shells show that those health care institutions were specifically and intentionally targeted. Material damage to medical institutions in Croatia during 1991 is estimated to cost nearly US$ 1 billion. This article calls attention to some general questions of documentation and presentation of these facts in international medical literature.
