Sažetak
The early development of enterprise and student entrepreneurial competence, as a precondition for the realization of the lifelong learning process, has become a priority task of the European educational systems in the past few years. Enterprise education, as the most explicit model for the development of personal enterprise and entrepreneurial competence, has a relatively long tradition within the European educational systems. Educational systems, like the compulsory education in Croatia, recently opted for coherent curricular reform, for the development of key competencies and functional literacy, where ˝enterprising students˝ and ˝being enterprising˝ are relatively new educational concepts and its expected educational results. Although entrepreneurship is not part of the existing educational tradition and the way the schools operate, it is completely wrong to assume that it is not “happening” in Croatian schools. In this paper we are dealing with the question of what determines the students enterprise potential, for instance, can it be attributed to socio-demographic characteristics. Furthermore, we are trying to determine the relationship between students’ perception of their own enterprise and their capacities (self-efficacy, self-esteem, tendency towards innovation and proactivity, tendency to be goal oriented)which are in theory connected with this concept and are a part of the broader self-perception. The aim of this study is to examine the possibility of predicting elementary school pupils’ entrepreneurial potential based on their socio-demographic characteristics, and their expressed attitudes towards innovation and proactivity, their tendency to be goal oriented, their self-efficacy and self-esteem. The study included a sample of 1.962 sixth- and eighth-graders in Croatian elementary schools. The research instrument was designed in the form of a questionnaire containing a series of degrees of evaluations. This research obtained socio-demographic data, while the evaluation of the students was achieved by using the following scales: Entrepreneurial Drive Scale [1], Attitudes to Enterprise Test ([2], [3]), Self-Efficacy Questionnaire for Children [4], Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale [5] and modified version of Tendency to Be Goal Oriented Scale [6]. By applying regressive analysis, we concluded that gender and age are statistically significant predictors of the self-assessment of being enterprising. However, the strongest predictors of student enterprise are their expressed tendencies for innovation and proactivity, as well as the social and emotional self-efficacy and affinity for goal orientation. These results, in theory, illuminate the background of the concept of ˝being enterprising˝ within the schooling context. They also show that educational work targeted toward the development of dimensions, for which predictor values have been established, greatly contribute to the students’ sense of being enterprising.
