Sažetak
Dermatology is considered one of the most attractive specialties in medicine due to high levels of professional satisfaction attributed to regular clinic hours and versatility of choices regarding the specific areas of interest and expertise within the specialty. However, recent survey on the lifestyle of dermatologists showed that almost 30% of dermatologists experience burnout during their career. Physician burnout is defined as a combination of emotional exhaustion, diminished sense of personal accomplishment, and depersonalization. During the last decade, increasing rates of burnout are observed among physicians worldwide. This is an important topic because physician burnout may be associated with the occurrence of professional errors as well as with decreased quality of medical service. Moreover, burnout affects psychological status of physicians, therefore it is not only important to recognize the contributing factors, but also the means to combat this phenomenon to prevent deterioration. There is a limited number of studies dealing with the psychological status and the rate of burnout among dermatologists. The authors will give an overview of the literature regarding burnout among physicians, namely dermatologists, as well as the results of the pilot study on the quality of life and the rate of burnout among dermatologists in Croatia.
